Elizabeth Askren will be interviewed as a guest artist on radio show Downtown as part of « La démocratie face au terrorisme« , France Inter’s special all-day hommage to 9/11′s 10-year anniversary.

Featuring guests from the Franco-American cultural community, the 2-hour radio show analyses New York’s artistic spirit in the wake of the 2001 attacks.

New Video, Fondation des Etats-Unis

The Fondation des Etats-Unis announces its presentation video which is now uploaded and viewable on the homepage of its website, www.feusa.org . Created in partnership with the American Center France and the Embassy of the United States in France, the video features fully bilingual commentary presenting the Fondation’s history, mission statement, and spirit.

The film is dedicated to the Fondation’s residents past and present, and showcases several prominent members of its community, including Harriet Hale Woolley (HHW) scholars and members of PONT – Portes Ouvertes aux Nouveaux Talents, the pre-professional program for artists and musicians in residence at the Fondation.

Elizabeth ASKREN est l’invitée de Yasmine CHOUAKI sur l’émission « En Sol Majeur » de Radio France International. Transmis en directe le 25 novembre de 12h à 13h, l’émission propose des dialogues autour de la métissage des cultures à travers l’art, la politique, et la vie.

Lors de l’émission, Elizabeth ASKREN aborde avec Yasmine CHOUAKI des sujets aussi diverses que l’apprentissage de la direction, ses racines familiales, 9/11, et la poésie.

Radio France International décrit l’émission ainsi: « En Sol Majeur joue la partition du métissage de façon ludique et musicale. Elizabeth Askren has been invited as a guest on France Culture’s « La Vignette ».

Presented by journalist and on-air personality Aude Lavigne, the 5-minute show snapshots different facets of cultural figures.

In her interview with Aude Lavigne, Elizabeth Askren explores the art of conducting, from learning basic beat patterns to understanding complex works of art.

ASKREN featured in France’s La Croix

Elizabeth Askren was one of seven francophone conductors interviewed by France’s La Croix newspaper on the subject of being a woman in the conservative and largely masculin conducting world.

Entitled « Pas de baguette magique pour des femmes chefs d’orchestre » (« No Magic Wand for Female Conductors »), the article cites Marin Alsop and Simone Young, two women enjoying significant careers at the helm of international orchestras, as rare examples to follow for the next generation of female musical leadership.

Delicate and sensitive topics are adressed with tact, honesty, and humor as the seven conductors speak about the craggy climb to the podium.

1st AMERICAN WINS FRANCE’S ADAMI CONDUCTING PRIZE

Elizabeth Askren, conductor, wins Adami’s “Talents Chef d’Orchestre” prize

A native New Yorker based in Paris for over a decade, conductor Elizabeth Askren has been awarded the 2010 «Talents Chefs d’Orchestre» prize, attributed by France’s organization, Adami (Administration des Droits des Artistes et Musiciens Interprètes).

The prize recognizes conductors under 35 who are confirmed professionals and residents of France. Selected by an international jury, the three laureates will be featured in a public showcase concert, to which agents, festival and orchestra Directors, the media and other members of the artistic community are invited.

A graduate of the Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, and Bard’s Conductor’s Institute, Ms. Askren came to Paris in 1998 to study piano and conducting as a Woolley scholar of the Fondation des Etats-Unis. Working with leading period and modern instrument ensembles in Europe and North America, she has established a reputation on both sides of the Atlantic as a passionate conductor at home in both symphonic and operatic

repertoire.

Ms. Askren will conduct the Orchestre Colonne in concert at the Salle Gaveau on October 12th, 2010 at 8pm. She will perform Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony in a program also featuring works by Mozart and Beethoven.

Ms. Askren is honored to be the first American to receive this prize.

As the winner of Adami’s « Talents Chefs d’Orchestre » 2010 prize, Elizabeth Askren will be featured on French Radio station « Fréquence Protestante ». She will be interviewed as a guest of Marc Portehaut, a leading radio host in the French classical milieu.

During her interview with Marc Portehaut, Elizabeth Askren speaks about winning the ADAMI « Talents Chefs d’Orchestre » prize, and explores music from the old and new worlds.
